DNP vs FNP: A Degree And A Certification

DNP vs FNP is not a choice between two credentials of the same kind. The DNP is a degree a university awards. FNP is a board certification in family practice. Many family nurse practitioners hold one, many hold both, and here is how each route gets you there.

Key Takeaways

  1. 1

One is a degree, one is a certification. A university awards the DNP. A national board awards FNP certification, and a state licenses you on it.

  2. 2

Both boards accept a master’s. ANCC and AANPCB certify graduates of master’s, post-graduate certificate and doctoral FNP programs alike.

  3. 3

Many FNPs hold both. A BSN-to-DNP with a family track ends in the doctorate and the FNP exam. The two are not alternatives.

  4. 4

$132,300 is the NP median, whatever the degree. BLS publishes no FNP series and no DNP series. That figure covers every nurse practitioner (May 2025).

DNP vs FNP At A Glance

DNP vs FNP compared: what each is, who grants it and what it lets you do
DNP FNP
What it is An academic degree, the Doctor of Nursing Practice A national board certification in the family population focus
Who grants it A university, in a program accredited by CCNE or ACEN ANCC (FNP-BC) or AANPCB (FNP-C)
How you earn it Coursework, a DNP project and at least 1,000 supervised practice hours after the BSN An accredited FNP program, then a board exam (175 questions at ANCC, 150 at AANPCB)
Does it expire No Yes. FNP-BC runs five years before renewal
Lets you practice as an NP No, not on its own Yes, with an RN license and a state APRN license
Can you hold one without the other Yes, with a leadership or other non-FNP track Yes, through a master’s or post-graduate certificate

Is FNP A Degree?

No, and that is the whole of DNP vs FNP. Family nurse practitioner is one of the population foci inside the nurse practitioner role, and FNP is also the name of the certification in it. Two boards award that certification. American Nurses Credentialing Center awards FNP-BC, and its eligibility rule reads: “Hold a family nurse practitioner (FNP) master’s, post-graduate certificate, or DNP.” AANPCB’s candidate handbook requires “completion of a graduate, postgraduate, or doctoral Family Nurse Practitioner program accredited by a nursing accrediting organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.”

Read those two clauses together and the DNP vs FNP question changes shape. Neither board asks for a doctorate, and neither treats one as a different kind of candidate. A master’s graduate and a DNP graduate sit the same exam, earn the same letters and apply for the same state license. The degree decides how you trained. The certification decides what you may practice. DNP vs NP covers the same split for the nurse practitioner role as a whole.

Four Routes To FNP Certification

In DNP vs FNP, the routes matter more than the labels. Every route starts from a registered nurse license and ends at the same board exam. What differs is the degree you hold when you sit it.

  1. MSN with a family track. A master’s degree and eligibility for both FNP exams. The shortest route to family practice. Both boards name the master’s in their eligibility rules.
  2. BSN to DNP with a family track. A doctorate and eligibility for both FNP exams. You hold the DNP and the FNP at once. For someone who already knows they want the doctorate and wants one admission, not two.
  3. Post-graduate FNP certificate. No new degree. Eligibility for the FNP exams on top of a master’s or doctorate you already hold. For an NP certified in another focus, or a DNP graduate from a leadership track, who wants family practice.
  4. MSN-FNP, then a post-master’s DNP. You certify and practice as an FNP first, and add the doctorate later. For a working FNP whose next step is leadership, quality or faculty work, or whose employer will fund it.

Whatever the degree, ANCC requires the FNP program itself to include at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours, and the program must be accredited by CCNE, ACEN or NLN CNEA. The doctoral routes add AACN’s expectation of 1,000 supervised practice hours after the BSN, counted across the whole program.

On the doctoral side, this site’s dataset holds at least 46 DNP program records naming a family nurse practitioner track, about 10% of all records. Treat that as a floor. Most federal DNP records name no track at all, as DNP specialties explains. Family practice programs are ranked on our sister site: DNP-FNP programs, MSN-FNP programs and post-master’s FNP certificates.

What The DNP Adds For A Family Nurse Practitioner

On the clinical side of DNP vs FNP, the doctorate buys preparation, not permission. A DNP-FNP and an MSN-FNP with the same certification and license see the same patients under the same state scope. The doctorate adds coursework in systems, quality improvement and evidence, a final DNP project, and more supervised practice hours. That matters if the plan is to lead a practice, run a quality program or teach. It changes little for a clinician whose goal is a full panel of family patients.

The pressure to make the doctorate standard is real but has not become a rule. NONPF stated “the commitment to move all entry-level nurse practitioner (NP) education to the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree by 2025” and reaffirmed it in 2023. That target date has passed, and both boards still certify master’s graduates. A goal set for schools is not a licensing requirement for you.

DNP vs FNP Salary

BLS classifies by occupation, not by credential: there is no DNP wage series, and every figure here covers everyone in the occupation regardless of which degree they hold. BLS also publishes no family nurse practitioner series. Every population focus sits inside one occupation code, 29-1171. So DNP vs FNP salary has no federal answer on either axis, and the honest comparison is the one the license makes.

Annual wages, nurse practitioners and registered nurses, May 2025
Occupation Median 10th Percentile 90th Percentile
Nurse practitioners $132,300 $101,340 $174,420
Registered nurses $97,550 $68,940 $137,470

Nurse practitioners earned a median of $132,300 in May 2025, $34,750 above the registered nurse median. That step comes with the NP license and certification, and most of the people on the higher side of it reached it with a master’s. Where the pay varies is state, setting and experience, which the nurse practitioner salary page breaks down by state.

How Common Each Is

Family practice is the largest NP focus by a wide margin. In AANP’s primary care position statement, 51.3% of NP graduations in 2023-2024 were for the family certification exam, counting master’s, post-master’s and DNP graduates together. That is a share of new graduates, not of everyone in practice. The same statement says “About 87% of the 461,000 licensed NPs in the U.S. are educated and prepared in programs that focus on primary care.”

Which degree those graduates held is the part that changes the DNP vs FNP picture. AANP’s own description of NP education names both degrees as complete: “All NPs must complete a master’s or doctoral degree program and have advanced clinical training beyond their initial professional registered nurse (RN) preparation.” Choosing family practice does not choose a degree for you.

DNP Or FNP: Which Should You Get?

Settling DNP vs FNP starts with where you want to end up. If you want to treat patients of every age in primary care, you need the FNP either way. The real choice is which degree to earn it in.

  1. You want to practice as soon as possible. An MSN with a family track is the shorter route, and both boards accept it.
  2. You already know you want leadership, quality or faculty work. A BSN-to-DNP with a family track gets you the certification and the doctorate in one admission.
  3. You are already an FNP. A post-master’s DNP adds the doctorate without changing your certification. Ask how many of your master’s clinical hours count toward the 1,000.
  4. You hold a DNP or NP certification in another focus. A post-graduate FNP certificate adds family practice without another degree.

If the doctorate is the goal, the best DNP programs ranks accredited programs across every track, and how to become a DNP walks through admission.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a DNP and an FNP?

A DNP is a degree, the Doctor of Nursing Practice, awarded by a university. FNP is a certification: a family nurse practitioner has passed a national board exam from ANCC or AANPCB and holds a state license to practice. You can be an FNP with a master’s, a DNP graduate who is not an FNP, or both.

Is FNP a degree?

No. FNP is a population focus inside the nurse practitioner role and the name of the certification in it. The degree behind it can be a master’s, a post-graduate certificate or a DNP. ANCC’s eligibility rule reads: “Hold a family nurse practitioner (FNP) master’s, post-graduate certificate, or DNP.”

Do you need a DNP to be an FNP?

No. Both certifying boards accept a master’s. AANP’s description of NP education says “all NPs must complete a master’s or doctoral degree program and have advanced clinical training beyond their initial professional registered nurse (RN) preparation.” NONPF set a goal of moving NP entry to the DNP by 2025, but that was a target for schools, not a licensing rule, and the master’s route remains open.

Does a DNP-FNP earn more than an MSN-FNP?

Federal data cannot say. BLS classifies by occupation, not by credential: there is no DNP wage series, and every figure here covers everyone in the occupation regardless of which degree they hold. The BLS median for nurse practitioners was $132,300 in May 2025, covering family NPs and every other focus with any degree. Any DNP premium you see quoted comes from a survey or a school, not from BLS.

Can I get a DNP after becoming an FNP?

Yes. That is what post-master’s DNP programs are for. AACN’s expectation of 1,000 post-baccalaureate practice hours counts across your whole graduate education, so hours from your FNP master’s can count toward it. How many a program accepts is its decision, so ask each one.

Is DNP-FNP the same exam as MSN-FNP?

Yes. There is one FNP exam at each board, and the degree you trained in does not change which one you sit. ANCC awards FNP-BC and AANPCB awards FNP-C.
