Nurse Midwife Salary: What CNMs Earn

Both are advanced-practice roles, both are entered with a graduate degree, and both are paid at effectively the same median. That makes the comparison unusually clean, and it points at something worth saying plainly: the pay question here is already settled, so decide on the work.

Midwifery is a scope, not a setting. It covers prenatal care, labor and birth, postpartum care and, in most states, primary and gynecologic care across the lifespan. The call schedule is the part people underestimate. Births do not keep to clinic hours, and a practice with a small number of midwives covering continuous call is a different life from a scheduled outpatient panel, at the same median wage.

The other real difference is portability. A nurse-practitioner certification opens onto a field of 323,040 jobs. Midwifery opens onto 7,920. That is the constraint this page would put ahead of the wage, and the next section is about it.

No, and the profession says so in its own words. The American College of Nurse-Midwives states that All ACME-accredited midwifery education programs award a Masters Degree, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or Doctor of Midwifery (DM) degree. A master's is one of those three, and the certification exam asks for a graduate degree without naming which.

So a DNP is a route into midwifery rather than the price of entry. It is worth taking if your destination is faculty work, a practice leadership role or the systems side of maternal health, and it is worth thinking hard about if your destination is attending births, because the wage data above gives you no reason to expect the doctorate to pay for itself in salary.

Two structural points that catch people out. Entry to an accredited program requires a bachelor's degree, and several programs admit applicants who are not registered nurses onto a different certification track. And the 1,000-hour practice expectation that shapes DNP programs counts from the baccalaureate rather than per program, so hours banked during a master's can count toward it.

Midwifery is one of the smallest occupations the federal wage survey publishes separately. Nurse practitioners outnumber nurse midwives by about 41 to one, and registered nurses outnumber them by orders of magnitude beyond that.

A small field changes the shape of a career in ways a median cannot show. Openings near you may be rare, and moving for a post is more often part of the plan. Employers are concentrated, so a single hospital system closing a birth service can remove most of the local market at once. And a smaller pool of colleagues means practices are frequently small, which pushes call burden up.

None of that argues against midwifery. It argues for treating geography as a first-order question rather than a detail, and for asking about call structure and practice size in an interview with the same seriousness you would ask about pay.

Employment across nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives and nurse practitioners together is projected to grow 36% from 2025 to 2035.

Nurse midwives are one of the three occupations inside that figure, and the published profile does not break them out. Given how much larger the nurse-practitioner field is, that percentage is overwhelmingly a statement about nurse practitioners.
