CNE Certification: Requirements, Exam And Cost

CNE certification is the National League for Nursing’s credential for academic nurse educators. You’d think a doctorate would get you in. It doesn’t, not by itself. Here’s who qualifies, what the exam and fees look like, and which of NLN’s three credentials fits you.

Key Takeaways

  1. 1

A DNP alone may not qualify. You also need education preparation, such as 9 graduate education credits, or 2 recent years in an academic program.

  2. 2

Three credentials, not one. CNE takes a graduate degree, CNEcl can take a bachelor’s, and CNEn covers your first 3 years of teaching.

  3. 3

The CNE costs $425 to $525. That buys 150 questions in 3 hours, and every retest costs the same again.

  4. 4

74% passed in 2025. NLN reports 1,376 CNE registrations that year and 7,227 people currently certified.

What Are The CNE Certification Requirements?

Every route starts with an unencumbered RN license and, for the CNE itself, a master’s or doctorate in nursing. After that, NLN’s eligibility page gives you two options, and you have to meet everything when you apply.

  • Option A, education preparation. Your graduate degree has a major emphasis in nursing education, or you’ve added a post-master’s certificate in nursing education, or you’ve taken 9 or more credit hours of graduate-level education courses.
  • Option B, faculty experience. Your graduate degree emphasized something else, and you’ve spent 2 or more years employed in a nursing program at an academic institution within the last 5.

Does A DNP Qualify You For The CNE?

Only sometimes, and this catches people. The degree level isn’t the test. NLN puts a master’s and a doctorate on the same line, then asks what the degree was in. So a clinical or leadership DNP with no education coursework, and no faculty job behind it, doesn’t qualify yet.

You’ve got two ways to close that. Take 9 credit hours of graduate education courses, and NLN’s examples are the ones you’d expect: curriculum development, instructional design, adult learning, assessment, teaching and learning, instructional technology. Check your transcript first, because your DNP may already include some. But graduate-level research or statistics courses don’t count.

Or teach. 2 years employed in an academic nursing program within the last 5 gets you in through Option B with no education credits at all. NLN’s wording is employment in a nursing program, so read the eligibility page closely if your faculty time was adjunct, and ask NLN’s certification office before you pay if it isn’t clear.

The doctorate matters more for getting hired than for sitting this exam. AACN reported 1,588 full-time faculty vacancies across 863 surveyed schools in 2025, and 80.9% of them required or preferred a doctorate. If you’re still choosing a degree, DNP vs PhD is the comparison that decides the faculty lines you can apply for.

CNE vs CNEcl vs CNEn

NLN runs three nurse educator certifications. The CNE is the one people mean and by far the largest, with 7,227 people currently certified. The CNEcl is for clinical teaching and is the only one with a bachelor’s route that doesn’t need an education certificate. The CNEn is a starter credential for your first 3 years, and it can’t be renewed, so it’s a bridge to the CNE and not a substitute for it.

What’s On The CNE Exam?

The CNE exam has 150 multiple-choice questions and you get 3 hours. Only 130 count. The other 20 are new questions NLN is testing, and you can’t tell which is which. Each question has 3 answer options, and the handbook says the emphasis is on application and analysis, not recall. You can test at a center or online with a live proctor.

Facilitating learning is the biggest area by a wide margin, at 47 of the 130 scored questions, or 36%. So if you’ve only ever taught at the bedside, the classroom strategy and curriculum questions are where to spend your time.

The 74% pass rate. NLN’s 2025 statistics list 74% pass and 26% fail beside 1,376 CNE registrations. You’ll still see lower, older figures on test-prep sites, so check the year. The CNEcl and CNEn rates are higher, 82% and 84%, but they come from far fewer people and different exams, so they don’t mean those credentials are easier.

If you don’t pass. You can test again every 90 days, up to 4 times a year, with a new application and the full fee each time. NLN also sells a practice exam, its Self-Assessment Examination, and the handbook explains how to order it.

How Much Does CNE Certification Cost?

The CNE exam is $425 for NLN members and $525 for non-members. A retest is the same price, so failing once doubles it. Moving an appointment costs $50. Those fees apply to testing in the continental US and Hawaii, and NLN asks candidates in US territories to call about theirs.

Add the first renewal and you’re at $800 as a member or $1,000 as a non-member, before any prep materials or continuing education. That’s worth asking your school about, since an employer who wants the credential may pay for it. Ask before you register.

How Do You Renew The CNE?

The CNE lasts 5 years. NLN gives you two ways to renew: by credit, with 75 to 80 renewal credits from professional development activities, due October 1 of the year your certification expires, or by retaking the exam, due December 31. Both cost $375 for members and $475 for non-members.

Keep your records as you go. NLN audits a random sample of renewal applications each year, and if you’re picked and can’t document your activities, you lose the credential. And if you’re leaving academic work, retired status is a one-time $250 for members or $325 for non-members, with no renewals after that.

Is CNE Certification Worth It?

It’s voluntary, and you can teach nursing without it. So the question is what it does for you, and pay isn’t something we can answer. BLS reports a median of $80,250 for nursing instructors across 77,960 jobs, but it counts the occupation, not who holds which credential. We found no published figure for what the CNE adds to pay, and we’re not going to guess at one. The nurse educator salary page covers what that wage does and doesn’t tell you.

It’s strongest when you’re moving from practice into teaching. A clinician applying for a faculty post has plenty of evidence they can do the nursing and not much that they can teach it, and the CNE speaks to that. Before you spend the money, look at job postings at the schools you’d actually work for, and see whether they list it as required, preferred or not at all.

It’s weaker if you already have a long teaching record at a school that doesn’t ask for it. If your goal is the job itself, the nurse educator career guide covers the route in. Leaders weighing a different credential should look at nurse executive certification instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the CNE certification requirements?

You need an unencumbered RN license and a master’s or doctorate in nursing. Then either education preparation (a major emphasis in nursing education, a post-master’s certificate in it, or 9 or more graduate education credits) or 2 or more years working in an academic nursing program within the last 5. You must meet every criterion when you apply.

Can I take the CNE exam with a DNP?

Yes, if the DNP comes with education preparation or you’ve worked 2 years in an academic nursing program within the last 5. A clinical or leadership DNP with neither doesn’t qualify yet. Graduate-level research or statistics courses don’t count toward the 9 education credits.

How much does CNE certification cost?

The exam costs $425 for NLN members and $525 for non-members, and a retest costs the same. Rescheduling an appointment costs $50. Renewal after 5 years costs $375 for members and $475 for non-members.

What is the CNE exam pass rate?

NLN reports 74% passing and 26% failing in its 2025 statistics, listed against 1,376 CNE registrations. The same page shows 82% for CNEcl and 84% for CNEn, on much smaller numbers.

What is the difference between CNE and CNEcl?

CNE covers the full academic faculty role and requires a graduate nursing degree. CNEcl covers clinical teaching and can take a bachelor’s in nursing, with 3 years in nursing and 2 years teaching within the last 5. The CNEcl exam costs $350 for members and $450 for non-members.
